In 2002, we fell in love with Alaska and purchased property near Fairbanks. Our Alaska log home was built in 2003 by Bill Kisken of Log Weavers here in Fairbanks. Bill is an artist, who uses the hand scribed Swedish cope system. Notice how tightly the logs fit at the ends, this is very diffucult to achieve. We retired in 2013, and moved our residence to Alaska.

The Price of Wood Skis on eBay

I was just outbid on eBay for a pair of wood Norwegian skis (Gresshoppa, Tur Langrenn). The winning bid was $205! Last year, you could get them on eBay for less than $100. That's a faster inflation rate than the price of oil. It's crazy: This time of year, you can get new Fisher racing skis for $200!

Since they don't make them any more, the only place you can find wood skis is at garage sales, eBay, or woodenskis.com. The last manufactuer in Norway, Åsnes, stopped making them about 15 years ago.

It's obvious that my wood ski victory in the Birkebeiner has increased the price of wood skis! Many racers on the Birkie trail noticed that I was able to go straight up those hills, while everyone else struggled with the need to herringbone. Several racers asked me about them. Those skis were great on the down hills as well, and I passed a lot of people on the flat portions, particularly the lake in the last 5k. The next time I race, I'm going to paint my wood skis yellow to look like Fisher Crown RCS skis. I don't want to be paying $300 for wood skis on eBay.
