Just completed the book: No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam by Reza Aslan. This is an excellent history of Islam. The author's position is that Islam is in the midst of an internal reformation. The conflict caused by Al Qaeda and Wahhabism is a fundamentalist reaction to this reformation as Islam confronts the changes of the modern world. As proof of this internal struggle, Mr. Aslan points to the London terror attack on the Tube, which victimized primarily the Muslim community of London. Perhaps the most disconcerting issue facing Islam is its treatment of women. This is brought out in stark fashion in Asne Seierstad's compelling work the Bookseller of Kabul. I highly recommend both books.
