In 2002, we fell in love with Alaska and purchased property near Fairbanks. Our Alaska log home was built in 2003 by Bill Kisken of Log Weavers here in Fairbanks. Bill is an artist, who uses the hand scribed Swedish cope system. Notice how tightly the logs fit at the ends, this is very diffucult to achieve. We retired in 2013, and moved our residence to Alaska.

More on wood skis.

Our good friends from Argentine Tango, Ingrid and Karl Jacob, sent me these photos of Ingrid on a ski vacation in Finse, Norway, in February, 1964. Note the wood skis, which Ingrid says would climb straight up a hill. There are some steep hills and a glacier surrounding Finse. Cathy and I have hiked around Finse numerous times in the summer. It's beautiful but the hills are steep. Those wood skis must have served Ingrid well on those hills.
Finse is the high point on the railway from Oslo to Bergen. There is a famous hotel there called Hotel 1222, after the altitude of 1,222 meters. There are no roads to Finse, the railway provides the sole means of transportation to and from Finse. During summer, however, it is possible to bicycle to Finse. During the winter, Finse is popular for cross-country skiing. Scott trained there for his expedition to the South Pole. In the summer there is glacier walking on the adjacent 'blue ice' Hardangerjøkulen glacier. Finse is also where they filmed the ice planet in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
